Lake, Wisconsin
Green
Lake is located in South Central Wisconsin on Wisconsin's deepest
inland lake. We are 180 miles north of Chicago, 250 miles southeast
of Minneapolis, 75 miles southwest of Green Bay, 45 miles southwest
of the Fox Cities, 80 miles northwest of Milwaukee and 70 miles
northeast of Madison. Climate Green Lake offers a four seasons way
of life-white winters, green springs and summers and colorful Autumns.
Green
Lake County in central Wisconsin is one of the smallest counties
in the state. It was formed in 1856 from Marquette County and contains
Wisconsin's deepest lake, Green Lake. The county seat is the city
of Green Lake. The largest city in Green Lake County is Berlin.
Other cities and villages include Kingston, Markesan, Marquette,
and Princeton. Surrounding counties include Columbia, Dodge, Fond
du Lac, Marquette, Waushara, and Winnebago. Anne Hathaway Cottage
is located off of Highway 23 within the American Baptist Conference
grounds. This gated community makes a safe refuge for travelors
wanting seclusion and beauty. Anne Hathaway Cottage has a 150 foot
lake front view with a private pier. Anne Hathaway Cottage is the
most photographed home on big Green Lake due to it's unique style
and history.
In Green Lake Country the dew stays on the grass a bit longer. Folks
linger over lunch a tad longer. Sunsets last a little further into
the evening. And we wouldn't have it any other way. Folks can be
a lot friendlier when they're not in a hurry.
Off
The Beaten Path. Green Lake Country is what it is today because
we are a little off the beaten path. We've managed to retain the
history, charm, beauty and friendly atmosphere that makes us so
different from other resort areas. Unspoiled and natural, our rich,
rolling hillsides; deep, silent woods; and sparkling lakes and streams
are as inviting and tranquil now as they were when the first explorers
passed this way. There isn't a better setting for a romantic and
restful getaway.
Outdoor
Activities
If
you yearn for outdoor activity, you'll find no shortage of it in
Green Lake Country. You can play three different championship golf
courses, a total of 99-holes worth. Swim, fish, boat or even scuba
dive in Big Green lake, the deepest and cleanest spring-fed lake
in Wisconsin, or in any of the surrounding lakes, ponds and rivers.
The area is also home to some of the best hunting in the Midwest
on almost 15,000 acres of public hunting land. Bicycle and hike
through the countryside.
Parks
In
addition to six county parks, most of the cities and villages have
one or more parks with baseball diamonds, picnic areas, playgrounds,
shelters and restrooms. Some have swimming available.
Winter
Activities
There is no shortage of activities in Green Lake Country even
during winter. Stroll though winter festivals that set the local
communities sparkling. Some lakes become communities in their own
right when frozen, covered with ice boats, ice skaters, sleighs
and ice-fishing shanties. Or you can explore the 155 kilometers
of winter trails on snowmobiles, crosscountry skis or snowshoes.
Shopping, Antiques, Flee Markets
We
sincerely doubt anyone could ever tire of outdoor activites; but
should you want a change of pace, there are incredible opportunities
in Green Lake Country. All the towns are quite historic and boast
some of the most beautiful Victorian mansions in the Midwest, especially
Berlin, Markesan and Ripon. For the shoppers among our visitors,
Green Lake Country abounds in antiques (the single reason many people
visit the area), art galleries, crafts, homespuns, fur and leather
garments, one-of-a-kind shops, and offers Wisconsin's largest weekly
outdoor flea market in Princeton, good by itself for days of browsing.
The area is also dotted with fine restaurants, pubs, ice cream shops,
bakeries, cookie and jam and jelly outlets and more; so if your
vacation pleasures tend to be the epicurean kind, you'll be quite
"satisfied" in Green Lake Country.
Fishing
Big
Green Lake is listed as a 'quality fishing opportunities' lake.
This means Big Green Lake is managed for quality fishing. Given
water productivity, fish growth potential, and higher minimum length
regulations, fish inhabiting these waters should attain greater
sizes. Anglers fishing these waters will have a better chance of
catching a 'quality' fish. OPEN WATER FISHING FAVORITES: Smallmouth
Bass, Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Northern, White Bass, Walleye,
Lake Trout and Muskellunge. ICE FISHING FAVORITES: Perch, Bluegill,
Walleye, Northern, Lake Trout
On
Big Green Lake, 'hook and line' fishing is open all year for all
fish species except muskellunge, trout and threatened or endangered
fish. Motor trolling is permitted. Lake Trout season opens the 1st
Saturday in January and runs through the end of September. Lake
trout must be 17 inches long. Daily bag limit is 2 per person. All
other trout have size limit of 14 inches and daily bag limit of
3 per person. (Inland Trout Stamp required for Big Green Lake).
Muskellunge season starts the 1st Saturday in May and runs until
November 30. Minimum length is 40 inches and daily limit is 1 per
person.
Historical
Sites
The
"Little Depot" in Green Lake - You will be delighted the next time
you visit Green Lake if you take the time to stop in at the "Little
Depo" Historical Museum, located downtown near the falls. If you
visit the "Little Depot" during the Green Lake Art Fair, you can
indulge in an ice cream and lemonade social, hosted by members of
the Historical Society. The "Little Depot" was build in 1872 for
the village of Dartford (Green Lake's original name). As the community
grew, so did train travel, and soon up to six trains stopped daily.
In 1976, the new owner of the grounds that the "Little Depot" occupied
donated the building to the Dartford Historical Society, and it
was dedicated as a museum on July 4, 1976. The museum houses irreplaceable
artifacts, collections, pictures, rare paintings and documents,
and is open daily from Memorial Dat through Labor Day, and by special
appointment. The headquarters of the Dartford Historical Society
is located in the former Caestecker Library building on the corner
of Mill and South Streets. The building serves as an archives, reference
center, and exhibit area. You may reach the Society at (920) 294-6194

Summer
Concerts
Wednesday
evenings in July and August. This free concert series can be enjoyed
in Deacon Mills Park. Call the Green Lake Chamber of Commerce at

Activities
Now
in its 23rd season, the festival sponsors a series of summer concerts

Flee
Market
Every
Saturday from April 27 through October 19 in the City Park on Hwy
73/23. One of the largest flea markets in the state, it boasts booths
filled with THOUSANDS of new, used, antique, collectible & craft
items along with plants, spices, produce and plenty of great things
to eat. Admission and parking are free. Come early for the best
